Solids for Jack = Meltdown for Luke

Back in June, we gave Jack rice cereal for the first time. We were so eager to start this process ASAP with Luke. But, with our second, we were certainly in no hurry. The later, the better.

We thought Luke would love to see Jack eating from a spoon. But as soon as we gave Jack his first bite, this was Luke's reaction:

Oh. my. goodness. It was bad. What in the world? We were so confused. Luke was so genuinely upset, that he couldn't communicate what was going on in the midst of the blubbery of his tears.

Finally, we made out the word "bowl" from his weeping. We thought that maybe he wanted a bite?? So, we offered him some, but he quickly declined, even more upset. Finally, I put the bowl in front of him on his high chair tray. (He was eating dinner at the same time.) Silence. When we took the bowl back, he went into it again. We realized that he didn't want Jack to use his bowls. Ohhhhh....

This was the first sign of any type of jealousy that we had ever seen from Luke toward Jack. Not bad for almost 6 months! We explained that the bowls were for both of them, not just Luke. He didn't like it, but he got over it. In fact, we just gave Luke some applesauce tonight from one of those little Gerber bowls, and he said, "Hey! No, this is Jack's bowl!" 2-year-olds are so confusing.

When I told my mom this story, she said, "Oh, Alissa. Just go to the store with Luke and make it a big deal to buy Jack his own special bowls. Then, Luke can keep his own bowls." Typical grandma. :) I was quick to inform her that Luke WILL learn to share his bowls. The last thing we need in our cabinet is a new set of plastic bowls just to please a little boy. This was even more ironic coming from my mom, who threw away our coveted blue plastic cup, the ONLY blue cup we owned, just because my brothers, sister and I fought over it multiple times a day. Something must change when you become a grandma. ;)

Jack, on the other hand, did not know what he was getting into.

And, he wasn't so sure about it.
This one cracks me up. He does have a neck, I promise.
Now, he is a cereal-vegetable-fruit-eating champ.
